Connecticut towns and cities issued less than half as many housing permits this July than it did last year, according to U.S. Census estimates released by the state Department of Economic and Community Development on Tuesday morning. The total number of housing permits issued last month was 302 compared with 743 in July 2022. East Haven authorized the most number of units at 73, followed by Newington (22), Milford (12), Ledyard (nine) and Ridgefield (nine). So far this year, the number of housing permits authorized in Connecticut is 3,283 compared to 5,244 through the end of July last year, reflecting the effect of higher interest rates on the construction of new homes.
